Area description

Salò is the largest city at the western shore of Lake Garda and belongs to the province of Brescia. The municipality with 10.316 inhabitants is situated at the foot of “Monte San Bartolomeo” (568 m) in the Bay of Saló. The city is surrounded by moraine hills in the south and in the west. Salò is the most densely populated municipality of the “Alto Garda Bresciano” and is considered as the “capital” of this area.

The “Riviera bresciana” a region between Salò and Gargnano characterized by wonderful Mediterranean vegetation begins in Salò. The climate is mild due to the geographical location of the town between Valtenesi, “Valle Sabbia” and the upper Lake Garda.

Salò is an important centre of tourism, education and culture for the villages located at the western part of the Lake.

The beautiful lakeside promenade is the longest of the entire lake. It leads to the idyllic, comfortable shingle beaches in the south of the bay. The “Colle San Bartolomeo” provides numerous walking paths and panoramic tours through the pine forest.

The old town consist of a dense network of narrow streets and small squares, with many shops and excellent restaurants. The cathedral of “Santa Maria Annunziata” is considered as the most important church of Lake Garda.

Sitting on an enchanting gulf at the foot of Mount S. Bartolomeo (568 m), Salò is the capital of the Upper Garda area within the province of Brescia. The old city center between Piazza Carmine, the "Fossa" and the lake shore is a dense network of streets, alleys and small squares lined with elegant homes, shops, restaurants and bars. The market held every Saturday morning is very popular, and is right opposite "Il Brolo" so just cross the street to experience it. Neighborhoods of the town (Barbarano, Campoverde, Cunettone, Renzano, San Bartolomeo, Serniga and Villa) are marvelous spots for excursions and walks. Fishing, windsurfing, rowing, yachting and tennis are readily available. There are public facilities for swimming, football, volleyball, basketball and bocce, while private facilities are available for dance, gymnastics, fencing, judo, etc.

Salò, which lies between the Valtenesi, Valsabbia and the Upper Lake Garda areas, is in a particularly favorable geographical position. Public transportation to and from Desenzano del Garda, Brescia and Riva del Garda is quite good, and there is regular ferry service between the major towns on the lake from March to October.

Your review of the accommodation:
A modern, clean and well-equipped apartment very well located for easy walking to the Lake Garda 'lungolago' (promenade). Nearby supermarket and convenient car parking right outside the apartment building. Very secure and comfortable. Salo is a good resort to stay in with plenty of nice restaurants and an excellent base to explore the Lake Garda region. Great spot for adjacent Saturday market in the neighbouring car park. Thoroughly recommended.

Your review of the accommodation:
Great location in Salo. Lovely sunny apartment - we spent a lot of time on the balconies. The A/C in two of the bedrooms was appreciated. Worth noting that the pool cannot be used between 1pm and 3pm (siesta) - not an issue for us but possibly for those with older children. Also only 2 sun loungers per apartment meant it was useful to bring a rug for lying in the grass, and a parasol to protect us from the sun.
